From Albany, NY to Fort Edwards, NY Town Dock

Monday, June 11. After an early breakfast, both Seaquel and Second Wind headed for Troy Lock, the first of many locks for both of us. This is a decision point for cruisers. We could turn west and go through the Erie Canal with Seaquel or continue straight through the Champlain Canal system and on to Lake Champlain and points north. We chose the latter.
The lockmaster at Lock 1 gave us a huge packet of pamphlets and maps furnished by the NY State Canal System. The canals are one of America’s official National Heritage Corridors and clearly spurred economic growth in the Northeast in the 19th century. We were a little apprehensive about all the locks, but we had no problems. Securing the boat was just a matter of passing a line around a pipe or a cable that ran the full height of the lock wall. We made it through seven locks on the Champlain Canal today. A much bigger problem was all the pollen and cottonwood tree fuzz in the air. Cough, cough!
