From Kingston, New York, to Albany, New York

Sunday, June 10. Again it was a little hazy as Seaquel and Second Wind headed up the Hudson River once more. We saw several of the large Hudson River estates on the hillsides and two more lighthouses with the lights literally integrated into the pretty brick houses. The frequent sound of train whistles reminded us that we were in the area where commuter trains were the norm.

As we neared Albany, the scenic serenity of the Hudson gave way to more utilitarian sights. From our dock at the Albany Yacht Club, a taxi took us through some not-so-lovely areas to beautiful downtown Albany, with its glorious history and architecture. A tour of the New York State Museum gave us an overview, featuring everything from the state’s prehistoric animals to its modern-day culture, a Sesame Street display included. The museum is part of the Rockefeller Empire State Plaza complex, which also includes an auditorium called “The Egg” for obvious reasons. The architecture of downtown Albany is stunning! Since this was our last night to travel this part of the Loop together, the Lillys and the Staggs treated ourselves to dinner at Jacks, a well-known old restaurant on State Street. A mighty fine meal was a perfect way to celebrate our successful cruise through some challenging waterways. We’ll be happy to see the Lillys again later.
