Celebrating Canada Day in Kingston, Ontario

Sunday, July 1. Martha and I looked everywhere in vain for Canadian tee shirts so we would fit in with the locals sporting maple leaf hats, red and white shirts, shorts, jackets, and even Canadian flags worn as capes. We were too late! On this holiday weekend, the Canadians celebrated their Independence Day in various ways. In Kingston a day-long festival at Confederation Harbor included a parade, an arts and crafts festival, and musical entertainment ending with fireworks. We arrived there by late afternoon, ate at the famous Stoney’s Gourmet Pizza, then we froze our buns while waiting for the fireworks. Recalling our own history of Fourth of July festivals, we weren’t dressed for weather in the 40s. When it was still too light to start fireworks at 9:30 p.m., we gave up and headed back to the boat to defrost ourselves. We agreed that the sport of people watching had been just as interesting as the fireworks would have been.
