Rideau Canal: Smith Falls to Westport, Ontario

Thursday, June 28. For the first time since we started the Rideau Canal System, our route included some really remote areas. However, plenty of vacation cottages, modest houses, and even large, beautifully landscaped homes dotted the shores of the three Rideau lakes that we cruised through. Only three locks were on our route today; the last one proved that lockmasters know how to pack boats in these small lock chambers. On the Narrows Lock, a total of seven boats were crammed into the small lock chamber.

The weather has turned cool again, and we had on various layers of shirts, fleece, and jackets. The Canadians were perfectly happy in bikinis – it’s July after all – and summer is short! We tied up early at Westport Harbour, the city marina, just off the Rideau Canal. Westport is a wonderful town – pretty as a postcard and very boater friendly. We walked all over the town, checked out great shops, enjoyed fresh ice cream, snapped photos, and carried supper out from a highly recommended fish and chips restaurant. Just for the record, Westport has become one of my new favorite places -- Eh!
