The Benjamins to Turnbull Island, North Channel

Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Before leaving Croker Island this morning, we enjoyed watching a momma duck and her babies as they made their route around the boats, looking for handouts. Those pink rocks keep calling my name; I can’t get enough of them. Along with Happy Destiny, we headed back out into the North Channel through open water until we reached a tight squeeze named “Little Detroit” on the chart. We made a “securite’ call” to say that we were coming through this narrow passage, but an oncoming boat just ignored it (they probably didn’t even have their radio on.)

By mid-afternoon we pulled into our anchorage for the evening: Turnbull Island. We immediately launched our dinghies and started exploring. We saw two minks swimming, then climbing to the shore. How cool is that! So many different nooks and islands to explore and so little time! The various rock colorations are fascinating. Our dinner offering was frozen veggies, applesauce, and burnt kabobs – not one of our best “company meals,” but the companionship was excellent. Also, Jane provided brownies. Yum!

Canada has been delightful -- the best part yet. The realization that we are approaching the final few chapters of our Great Loop adventure has begun to sink in. Hearing now-faint radio calls from Looper boats who were on the flotilla and are still anchorage-hopping make us want to stay longer. For the record, claims that Georgian Bay and North Channel waterways are the Caribbean of the North aren’t exaggerated. They have been glorious. We have only one more day here before we head back to the U.S. and home. Come to think of it, that doesn’t sound so bad either.
