Chicago’s Architecture via River Cruise
Friday, August 31.
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 wiped out the entire central business district, destroying more than 17,000 buildings. The city quickly rebounded. Architects and developers then had a blank slate, which they used to build “new” steel skeleton frame skyscrapers. From the graceful, highly ornamented, classic design of late 19th century buildings to stylized Art Deco designs of the 1920s, then to the sleek, austere, highly engineered buildings in more recent years, Downtown Chicago has it all. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the skyscrapers we had been passing all week. We will take some of the same river route through the city again tomorrow, but this time from the vantage point of Second Wind.
We are enjoying your website very much...and want to visit Chicago soon! We live in Tobermory, Ontario, where Georgian Bay meets Lake Huron, west across G.Bay from Parry Sound, "God's country"! We spend the winters on Snow Cat around FL and Bahamas. We will be meeting Sweet Dreams on the west coast of FL this Dec. and hopefully will see Second Wind also. Good luck on your wonderful adventure!

Great to hear from you! We have met Paul and Susan briefly, but our schedules were different, so we haven't actually traveled with them. We HAVE had a ball on this whole trip, but I'll have to tell you that your neighborhood is "God's Country" for sure. We had to tear ourselves away! Somehow, some day, we will get back up there. It is simply gorgeous.
Right now we are nearing the end of our Loop, and it is with mixed feelings, I assure you. When we get to the mouth of the Tenn Tom Waterway, we will cross our wake. We hope to go back to the Keys and maybe the Bahamas during the winter of '08. Our PDQ has been the perfect boat for doing this trip. Please give us a holler if you come up the Tennessee River near Huntsville, AL. Have fun and travel safely!
